Stay fit on holidays

The How and Why

Unless you're an athlete, training rigorously every day of the week, there’s no reason to stop your workouts when you go on holiday. In fact, I think it’s one of the best times to train even harder. Why?

Because you will usually have more time on a holiday to schedule in training, you will also be in a state of mind and body that’s prime for rest, making it SO much easier to recover from workouts.

I’ve never understood debaucherous holidays - the truth is; why would I want to go away to a beautiful place, only to spend 90% the time blind drunk or hungover, only to return to ‘life’ feeling worse than I did when I left.

Pure pleasure in my eyes, involves a healthy body and mind.

So this blog is dedicated to (hopefully) inspiring you towards a slightly healthier itinerary; You won’t regret it, and you’ll come back feeling fresh and rejuvenated. Debauchery is sah last season - it’s time to embrace the Healthy Holiday - for good.

Now aside from the intention to holiday healthfully, there are a few things that I believe are critical ingredients, resulting in a healthy AND hedonistic holiday.

Schedule-in daily workouts:

Now I recognise that if you’re on holiday, the last thing you want to do is have to ‘check your calendar’, so before you even arrive at your destination make a promise to yourself that you will workout daily, noting in your mind the time - will the workouts be in the morning? Evening? Before Lunch?

(It will depend on many different circumstances, but it’s good to prepare a rough idea in your mind).

In addition to planning the time, note the type of workout and if you’re short on inspiration - use youtube or my Vimeo videos.

Pack Travel-Friendly Fitness Equipment:

TRX - The TRX while the priciest of the lot, basically enables you to have THE BEST WORKOUT you could get without a gym.

Booty Bands - Booty bands fit into even the teeniest carry on bag, but in terms of intensifying your booty workouts, these babies pack a punch. Check out this video for some fitness and workout inspiration.

Travel Yoga Mats - I think there can be a misconception that yoga is accessible or relaxing, when in fact, if you modify the speed of your practice slightly - making it a little more dynamic, you can get a deep burn on. “But is that really the point of yoga?” I hear you say… No, no it isn’t - however, it doesn’t mean that you won’t reap some serious strength and mobility benefits from doing it every morning on your holiday. The yoga mat also creates a sort of sacred space for your workout, and if you leave it lying on the floor beside your bed, you’ll be reminded to practice when you wake up in the morning.

Choose Fitness Friendly Hotels:

This doesn’t mean that they have to have fully functioning, state of the art Gyms, in fact, they don’t even have to have shitty gyms. I love to book hotels that are close to parks or beaches so that I can get out and do my workouts, while also taking in my surroundings (after all, I don’t go on holidays just so I can spend hours of it, locked inside a gym).

Have you seen the recent trip I did to Mexico? These hotels enabled me to have the perfect mix of chill and fitness.

Check out my review of them here: La Zebra / Mi Amor .
